KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Additional Inspector General of Police Ganesh Raj Adhikari has been appointed as the chief of the National Investigation Department (NID) on Monday.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Monday appointed Adhikari to the top post of the intelligence agency cutting short the four-year term of the NID chief through an amendment in the existing law, according to multiple sources. Now the term of the NID chief will be three years.

Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai confirmed Republica Online that the Council of Ministers appointed Adhikari as the chief of the NID.

Adhikari has replaced Dilip Regmi who had been serving as the NID chief since May 2015. With the government decision, Regmi has been relieved from the post. Regmi's four-year tenure was expiring in coming May.
