KATHMANDU, Aug 7: The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has started an investigation into the 100 kg gold smuggling case after the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) gave it the responsibility to do so. According to CIB sources, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjay Singh Thapa has been appointed as the chief investigation officer for the investigation into the gold smuggling case.


Since gold smuggling is an organized international crime, the CIB has been given the responsibility of investigating it. The 17 accused arrested in this case have been brought into the custody of the CIB from the DRI.

On July 19, the DRI seized approximately 100 kg of gold, which was concealed in scooter and motorbike brake shoes and was cleared by the customs office of Tribhuvan International Airport. The said gold is now kept at the Mint Division of Nepal Rastra Bank to ascertain the quantity.


So far, 18 people have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident. Although one person has been released due to illness, 17 are still in custody.
