SYANGJA, Aug 5: Former lawmaker from the Nepali Congress (NC) and Syangja district chapter president of the party, Kamal Prasad Pangeni died of cardiac arrest on Sunday morning. According to family sources, Pangeni died while undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
Late Pangeni had felt health complications the previous night when he was sleeping at his own residence in Bhirkot Municipality-6, Khilung. Family members had taken him to the local Kalika Community Hospital in Helu for treatment at wee hours Sunday. The Hospital had declared him dead at 7:30 am Sunday.
Pangeni was elected from Syangja Constituency -2 in the second Constituent Assembly election in 2013. District level NC leaders said they have lost a guardian. “The party has lost a capable and honest leader. He was not just a leader of the Nepali Congress, but also a leader and guardian of the entire district,” said NC District Chapter Secretary Kumar Rana.

NC in a press statement said that the demise of Pangeni had caused a huge loss to the party. In the statement, NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba has acknowledged Pangeni’s valuable contribution to the expansion of party organization. While praying for the eternal peace of his departed soul, President Deuba also expressed heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members.
Pangeni, who succeeded becoming the party’s district chapter president three times, was elected to the second Constituent Assembly from Syangja Constituency-2. However, he faced defeat in the provincial assembly election from Syangja 1 (Ka) in the recently held provincial assembly polls. He was defeated by NCP’s candidate Deepak Thapa Magar in the election.
Starting his political career from Nepal Students Union (NSU), Pangeni was a popular leader in the district. He was elected as NSU Central Committee member in 2042 BS.
Late Pangeni is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. The last rites of Pangeni were performed in Ramdi that lies in the border of Palpa and Syagnja on Sunday afternoon.
NC’s senior leaders from Kathmandu including President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Vice President Bimalendra Nidhi, General Secretary Dr Shashank Koirala, Dr Shekhar Koirala, Gopal Man Shrestha, Dhan Raj Gurung and NSU President Nain Singh Mahar had reached Syangja to pay their last tributes to late Pangeni. President Deuba wrapped his dead body with the party’s flag before the cremation.
