Formal royals in Darchula to distribute relief

DARCHULA, July 24: Ex-king Gyanendra Shah and former crown princess Himani Shah on Wednesday landed directly in the flood affected area at Khulla Manch in Khalanga, the district headquarters of Darchula.



The former royals have visited the district at a time when no political leaders have turned up to offer succor to the flood victims. Supporters of monarchy chanted slogans such as “long live our king” and “king save the nation”. A huge crowd had gathered at Khulla Manch to welcome the former royals. Himani Shah, chairman of the Himani Trust, distributed relief packages to the flood victims. [break]



According to Birsingh Badal, the district chairman Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, the former king had directed his supporters not to organize any function to welcome him. Members of over 250 families had arrived in the district headquarters to receive relief from the royals.



According to Santosh Aitwal, coordinator of the relief distribution program, each of the displaced family was provided with 45 kg of rice, clothes and utensils. The former king also provided Rs 700,000 to renovate five schools affected by the flood.
