According to a press statement issued on Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Ghimire will also hold meetings with heads of the UN agencies and World Trade Organisation during his stay in Geneva. Minister Ghimire is leading a Nepalese delegation to the High Level Segment of the Substantive Session of the ECOSOC. The ECOSOC Session has a number of segments, which lasts until July 26. Nepal elected as a member of the ECOSOC six months ago for the period 2013-2015.
“The ECOSOC Substantive Session will be devoted to twin themes; Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) and the potential of culture for promoting sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals; and the contribution of Economic and Social Council to the elaboration of the post- 2015 development agenda as a principal body for policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on issues of economic and social development and for the follow-up to the Millennium Development Goals,” reads a statement.
Minister Ghimire is scheduled to participate in the General Debate of the High Level Segment on Tuesday, where he will deliver a statement. He will also participate in other roundtable meetings and High Level policy dialogues.
“The UN ECOSOC annual Substantive Session will run till July 26 and it will be divided into various segments including Operational Activities Segment, Coordination Segment, Humanitarian Affairs Segment and General Segment,” reads a statement.
Minister Ghimire left for Geneva on Saturday with a five-member delegation. The other members of the delegation including Nepal’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Shanker Das Bairagi, UN Division Chief at the MOFA, Deepak Dhital, among others.
