Far-western folks celebrate Bishu festival

By
DHANGADHI, April 14: The Bishu Festival, which is celebrated during the Nepali New Year, is being celebrated with much gusto in far-western hilly regions.

The festival is celebrated by eating together several varieties of food including rice soaked in milk or curd. The people make fun with each other by playing with nettle plants, and exchanging jokes between brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

While colour is smeared and water splashed among each other in holi, people lash each other with nettle plants in Bishu Festival. Lashing with nettle plants is believed to take out all poisons from the body.

Likewise the festival is also marked by ending past feuds and developing friendship, exchanging new year greetings and adopting new visions by giving up the past conservative ones. The people decorate their house and clean the surrounding one or two days prior to the festival.
