Facebook, X and Instagram to be banned in Nepal if not registered within a month

The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) issued its third notice on Thursday, stating that if platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X do not register, they will be banned to regulate social media usage.

KATHMANDU, March 21: The government has warned that social media platforms will be blocked in Nepal if they are not registered within a month.


The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MoCIT) issued its third notice on Thursday, stating that if platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X do not register, they will be banned to regulate social media usage.

The notice issued by the MoCIT states, “It is informed that social media platforms failing to register within the specified time may be blocked from operating in Nepal as per Section 3, Subsection (7) of the Directive on Management of the Use of Social Media Networks, 2080 BS.”


Previously, the government had repeatedly urged social media platforms like Facebook, X, TikTok, and LinkedIn to register in accordance with the provisions of the Social Media Usage Regulation Directive, 2080. However, as of now, Viber Media, TikTok, and Saransh Media Lab Pvt. Ltd. (Weetok) have been listed in the ministry's registration notice.
