Eastern region self-reliant on meat products

BIRATNAGAR, Oct 25: Eastern development region has become self-sufficient in meat products, thanks to flourishing commercial animal husbandries in the region.

According to the Directorate of Livestock Production, the eastern region produced 120 million kilograms of meat in the Fiscal Year 2015/16. Last year, the region had produced around 110 million kilograms of meat in the last fiscal year.

Kumar Sangraula, regional livestock offer, said that mea production in the eastern region grew by 4.2 percent in the last fiscal year.

Data of Directorate of Livestock Production shows Morang, Udayapur and Jhapa are the top three districts in terms of meat production in the region. Morang produced 23,781 tons of meat in 2015/16, followed by Udayapur (21,395 tons) and Jhapa (14,357 tons). Dhankuta came last in the least producing mere 1,042 tons in the review year.

Likewise, Shankhuwasabha, Sunsari, Siraha and Ilam produced 12,881 tons, 10,112 tons, 10,396 tons and 9,586 tons respectively. Similarly, Taplejung, Panchthar, Terhathum, Bhojpur, Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Khotang and Saptari produced 2,512 tons, 6,016 tons, 1,236 tons, 2,696 tons, 2,695 tons, 3,538 tons, 3465 tons and 9,453 tons, respectively.

The region produced 29,605 tons of buffalo meat, 26,316 tons of chicken, 25,901 ton of mutton, 23,098 tons of pork and 16,519 tons of duck meat in the review year, according to the data.

Production of duck meat is increasing with passing year, according to the directorate. “Morang is the largest producer of duck meat in the region, producing more than 16,000 tons in the last fiscal year,” Sangraula added.
