Literate Karnali 2020’ is the objective of the organizers who have already started basic literacy classes in Majhfal VDC in Dolpa District where there are men and women as students. Through the program, their aim is to make all the locals literate in the five districts, Humla, Jumla, Mugu, Dolpa, and Kalikot. There are 60 such classes in the VDCs with 15 pupils in each class. The organizers have also gathered 45 local teachers to facilitate the classes.
Founder of Shiksha Nepal and Samunnat Karnali, Prem Bahadur Bohara, says, “We want to make all the locals in Majhfal literate by the time September comes around. Funds raised from this walk will go toward the costs of running future classes. A class of 15 students will cost Rs 45,000. The funds will provide blackboard, chalk, books, pencils and the salary of the teacher.”
Literacy gives people hope, says Bohara, adding that the experience of distributing books to children in Dolpa gave birth to this idea.
NMB, NBI join hands for financial literacy program
“We distributed books to schoolchildren. But they didn’t know how to read. So that’s also one of the main reasons why the program was started. We include everyone from a five years old to an elderly person in the classes. Only if a parent is literate can s/he keep track of the child’s learning graph. Otherwise, I know that children go to school but don’t learn anything and yet they pass class after class.”
The walk will start from 8 AM from Bluebird Mall in Thapathali to Basantapur. Each participant is expected to donate Rs 3,000 for the cause or raise the amount to meet the need of one person in the classrooms in Karnali.
