KATHMANDU, Nov 22: While medical practitioner Durga Prasai is preparing to demonstrate in Kathmandu on Thursday for what he called liberating the debtors of financial institutions including banks, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has warned that the government will act strictly against loan defaulters.
For the past few months, Prasai has been agitating to free the debtors, demanding a waiver of their loans. In recent public events, he has been constantly raising this issue, which is considered against the law.
Meanwhile, in a discussion with the private sector and government agencies at Singha Durbar on Tuesday, Prime Minister Dahal warned that the government would be strict against loan defaulters.

While narrating the conclusion of the discussion, he said, “The State will take strict actions against whoever talks about non-payment of debt by force or violates the constitutional provisions, laws, values and norms.” He said that dishonesty and immorality cannot be exempted.
Prime Minister Dahal hinted at businessman Durga Prasai and argued that the State cannot give any exemption to anyone voluntarily defaulting on loans. He said that forced non-payment of loans violates the constitution, laws and social values.
He said, “Nepal Rastra Bank has also been given the task of facilitating the borrowers who are unable to pay their loans due to the sluggish economy.”
He also added that a separate specialized regulatory body would be established so as to resolve the problems seen in the cooperatives within six months.
PM Dahal also mentioned that based on the suggestions given by the commission for reforming the tax system, the conclusion of the discussion would be made to improve the investment and production friendly revenue structure.
