KATHMANDU, Dec 21: Medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai has been released following the Supreme Court’s (SC) order on Friday.

A division bench of Justices Nahakul Subedi and Sharanga Subedi issued the order to release him from police custody in response to a writ petition filed by Prasai’s son, Nirajan, through his representative, Narayan Khawas, seeking Prasai’s release.

The petition was filed after Prasai was arrested from the premises of the Kathmandu District Court, immediately after being released on one charge. Despite his release, the police re-arrested him on another charge.

Prasai is currently under investigation by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) for allegedly extorting money from businessmen and his alleged involvement in organized crime.

Prasai was initially arrested from his residence in Bhaktapur on September 22 on cybercrime charges. He was later detained on charge of organized crime after being released on Rs 40,000 bail for the cybercrime related charge.

Prasai had also been arrested for allegedly spreading misinformation about Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Prasai and his associates are currently under investigation by the CIB for allegedly threatening businessmen.

Meanwhile, Prasai has vowed to continue his fight against what he called ‘smugglers.’ Upon his release, Prasai told reporters, “The court has given me justice. Thank you to my entire cyber family.”

He also mentioned that the police treated him like a family member during his time in custody. “I will not back down from this fight. I have to speak the language that the communists speak,” he told the media.

When asked about his appearance, as he was seen in a frail condition, he responded, “The sea calms down when the waves settle, and that’s what has happened to me. The fight against smugglers continues.”
