KATHMANDU, Dec 18: Oncologist from Nepal Dr Bishal Gyawali has been awarded the Global Oncology Young Investigator Award.
Dr Gyawali is the first-ever recipient of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Global Oncology Young Investigator Award (YIA) in Implementation Science.
Presently, he is a clinical fellow in the Department of Oncology at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario (CCSEO) and assistant professor at Queen’s University.

The YIA provides research funding to early-career investigators to encourage and promote quality research in global oncology and to develop the next generation researchers to address global health needs.
As part of his successful proposal, Dr Gyawali will be looking to implement an education model focused on training primary care providers in low-income countries based on chemotherapy, which will allow patients in rural settings to receive care closer to home. He will begin this work in his home country of Nepal.
“Patients in rural parts of the country normally have to travel a significant distance to the capital to receive treatment, but if we can train the primary care doctors based on chemotherapy patients will be able to receive care closer to home,” says Dr Gyawali.
The grant is for USD 50,000 and the proposal is to be implemented by the end of 2020.
