KATHMANDU, Dec 18: The printing of driving licenses has resumed after a temporary halt due to issues with the printing machine. The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has stated that printing of regular licenses is also taking place apart from the printing of licenses for those traveling abroad and emergency licenses.
According to the DoTM, about 4,000 licenses are being printed daily. The backlog of licenses which the DoTM is yet to print is about 2.2 million. However, the DoTM only has cards available to print about 1.2 million licenses.
Over 200,000 await digital driving licenses since months
As a large number of licenses are yet to be printed, the DoTM has started the process of purchasing another printing machine.
The Bagmati Provincial government has started providing digital licenses through the Nagarik app. The provincial government has also provided mobile phones to the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police for license verification from Nagarik apps that work offline as well. The valley traffic police have initiated checking digital licenses through the app and have begun taking action and imposing fines online against those violating traffic regulations.
Similarly, Koshi Province has also started giving temporary licenses to service seekers as soon as they pass the trial. The Koshi Provincial government has started issuing licenses by printing cards itself since mid-September.
