DOTM told to issue smart driving license cards from mid-Nov

KATHMANDU, Sept 5: Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has directed the Department of Transportation Management (DoTM) to expedite preparations for issuing smart driving license cards from mid-November.

Stating that service delivery of the government bodies will drastically improve through adoption of the latest technology, PMO secretary Shanta Raj Subedi directed the DoTM to complete all its preparations and start issuing smart driving license cards.The DoTM is making preparations to issue smart driving license cards with financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Though the authority was expected to start issuing digital license from last year, it has yet to complete necessary preparations. The ADB has provided Rs 150 million DoTM to replace existing paper driving license with a smart one.

Likewise, Secretary Subedi also directed the authorities concerned to speed up its preparations for issuing digital national identity card and setting up online service system in 15 various land registration offices on time.

"All information technology related projects launched in various government offices are aimed to be completed by March 2016. So, I direct all the concerned officials to carry out preparation works rapidly and complete the projects on time," said secretary Subedi.

Secretary Subedi had convened a meeting at the PMO on Friday that saw participation of ADB representatives and officials of various government agencies to discuss the progress made on information technology-related projects offices officials where preparations are underway to adopt various information technologies to improve service delivery. He said that the meeting was called and officials were directed to speed up the preparations.

Apart from smart driving license card and digital national identity card, ADB has also supported various government bodies to set up online service for purchase and sale of lands and online recording system of government's data in various offices.

Lately, Ministry of General Administration is also working with ADB to set up an online system to maintain records of all civil servants. Also, the Public Service Commission is also setting up an online service through which any individual applying for government jobs can file job applications online.
