Supreme Court clears mayor from murder


Siya Ram Kushwaha, mayor of Katariya municipality, Rautahat was given a clean chit by the Supreme Court. Kushwaha was convicted of murdering chairman and founder of Hindu Yuva Sangh, Kashinath Tiwari. On March 12, 2018, a temporary joint bench of Janakpur High Court judges Narayan Prasad Shrestha and Lekhnath Ghimire had sentenced  Kushwaha for 20 years in prison after finding him guilty in the murder of Tiwari.


Provinces to provide labor permits for migrant workers


Migrant workers from Province 2 and 5 will be able to get and renew their labor permits from the provinces itself. Until now, migrant workers had to commute to Kathmandu for the same. The new provision facilitates foreign employment, according to the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security.  The service will expand to the remaining five provinces.  


70 years on, land lenders await compensation for constructing Sapta Koshi Bridge


Seven decades after the Sapta Koshi Bridge construction, around 4,000 families from Saptari, Sunsari and Udayapur districts continue to await compensation from the Indian government. The families had provided lands to construct the Saptakoshi Bridge in 1944 AD. Every year during monsoon floods caused by the bridge results in loss of lives and properties. The Indian government had agreed to provide relief and incentives through schools, hospital, roads, and irrigation to the displaced households, none of which, according to the locals, has been in place.

Property worth two billion gutted in Gokarneshwar fire


An electric short circuit triggered a fire that gutted property worth two billion at Bhagwati Wool Thread Factory in Kathmandu. The fire was contained after three hours using seven firefighting trucks, Armed Police Force and local residents. 


India pips China in FDI inflows first time in 20 years


India has overtaken China in 2018 for the first time in the last 20 years in terms of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). With 253 inbound deals amounting to $39.515 billion, India’s annual FDI was higher than that of China’s so far this calendar year, according to data from Dealogic, a global financial markets platform. China attracted FDI to the tune of $33.02 billion in 397 inbound deals in the same period, the data showed. In 2017, while India had attracted FDI worth $18.57 billion in 205 inbound deals, China’s FDI amounted to $32.49 billion in 383 inbound deals.


Kiran Chemjong wins 'best goalkeeper award' in the Maldives


Nepali national Football team's goalkeeper Kiran Kumar Chemjong won the 'best goalkeeper' in the Maldives. According to the Football Association of Maldives, Kiran who had a significant contribution in the victory of the Maldives-based TC Sports Club in the National League Football 2018. Last month, Nepali national football team member Rohit Chand Thakuri bagged the title 'The best player of the year' in Indonesia, the highest level of Indonesian football competition.
