CPN-Maoist cadres vandalized four gauges, erected party flag at the project site, chanted slogans and demanded to immediately halt work on preparing the detailed report of the project. [break]
CPN-Maoist leader and former minister Khadga Bahadur Bishwokarma, who had led the group, said construction of the Saptakoshi High Dam Multipurpose Project would jeopardize national sovereignty. He also said they will continue their protests unless unequal treaties signed with India are scrapped.
“If the government tries to suppress our protest, we will not hesitate to retaliate.” said Bishwokarma.
In 1991, then government led by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had signed an agreement with India for the construction of the Saptakoshi high dam in Sunakhambe of the district.
Later, the government formed under the UCPN Maoist Puspa Kamal Dahal had initiated study for detailed report of the project. The high dam to be constructed in Sunakhambe will be 269 high.
