Talking to myrepublica.com, Coordinator of the festival, Sara Tareen says, “24 documentaries from all eight member countries of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) will be presented over four days of the festival and will focus on conflict, peace, people and culture.”
Along with the screenings, Tareen informed, “The festival will also double as an open house for critical reviews and discussions on various papers to be presented by leading directors: Kesang Tseten (Nepal), Saibal Chatterjee (India), Sirmed Khoosat, Tsering Ritar Sherpa (Nepal), Deepa Gahlot (India), and Tarque Masud (Bangladesh).”
“The festival organised by South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA) seeks to provide a multi cultural platform of South Asian documentary film makers for quality production and viewership,” says Secretary General SAFMA, Imtiaz Alam, “It will help understand each other and will create better awareness among South Asian people and help build a fraternity of South Asian documentary makers.”
The festival which was slated to be held in Mumbai earlier this month has been brought to Kathmandu keeping in view the fragile situations post Mumbai attacks. “SAFMA condemns the recent attack in Nepali Media and we will continue to highlight the issues of media freedom and also in promoting understanding and peace. The next SAFMA Documentary Festival however will be held in Mumbai in 2009,” says Alam.
