KATHMANDU, July 27: Nepal Police arrested three individuals on charge of their involvement in the call bypass, breaching the state rules that led to a significant revenue leakage.

According to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), the police detained Guljar Mohammad, Prabin Khadka and Deepak Singh Bohara on Wednesday in connection with the crime. While Mohammad is an Indian citizen, Khadka and Bohara are the permanent residents of Kanchanpur district.

The trio have been accused of bypassing calls for the past four months. Police seized the equipment used for the crime.

Call bypass is a term for the use of some equipment to divert the international calls from the official gateway of the telecommunication companies. They use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology for this sort of bypass. VoIP is a transmission technology for the communication of voice using internet protocol through internet and packet data networks.

In the illegal means, the call made from abroad shows the telephone numbers issued by the local telecommunication companies. In the illegal activities, the calls are transformed from outside the core gateway system. This made the government lose the tax revenues that could otherwise be collected from the telephonic conversations.

Call bypass is one of the serious and frequently noticed cyber crimes in Nepal. Three weeks ago, the CIB arrested two Indian nationals from Samakhusi, Kathmandu, for their involvement in the illegal business.
