KATHMANDU, Aug 28: All affected residents and stranded tourists have been evacuated to safety following a landslide in Gyirong County of southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region.
According to local officials, 499 villagers and construction workers affected by the landslide have been relocated to safe areas. A total of 555 tourists have also been rescued and taken to safety. Officials said no tourists remain stranded.

Following the landslide, local authorities evacuated affected residents and arranged temporary shelters for them. The displaced have been provided with food, essential supplies and healthcare. Public security personnel and rescue teams have continued search, rescue and relief operations at various locations.
Civil aviation authorities have also joined the rescue efforts. As of 3 pm Thursday local time, 324 rescue workers had been transported to the affected area through civil aviation services. They were accompanied by 24 tonnes of rescue equipment, essential supplies and medical materials. Officials said the supplies would support emergency rescue operations and the management of affected residents.
According to officials, an initial team of 26 rescue workers from the public security authorities established 24 emergency tents at the township government compound in Gyirong. The team evacuated more than 320 residents from the landslide-affected area. Additional affected residents were subsequently relocated to safe areas.
The landslide occurred Wednesday morning at Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, Xizang. Three people have died and 558 remain missing, while two local villagers have been rescued.
Chinese authorities said search and rescue operations, relief distribution and arrangements for displaced residents are continuing in the affected areas. (with inputs from agencies)
