KATHMANDU, Jan 22: The Child Health Division (CHD) under the department of Health Services (DoHS) said that it has been planning to send a fact finding mission to Kapilbastu district to probe the outbreak of measles virus.

About half a dozen children under the age of five in VDCs like Somdiha, Jahadi have reportedly died of the virus in the district."We have already sent a surveillance officer and doctor in the affected villages," Dr Rajendra Panta, director at the CHD, said. He informed that the fact-finding mission will be accompanied by senior public health experts.

Dr Panta claimed that the CHD has enough vaccines in its regional and central stores. "We have already asked the concerned health officials of the District Public Health Office (DPHO) Kapilbastu to investigate about the so called vaccine crisis," informed Dr Panta.

Due to the prolonged Tarai protest and the economic blockade imposed by India on Nepal since September, thousands of children across the country have been deprived of immunization.

The DPHO, Kapilbastu said that it has already sent surveillance officer and doctors to the affected VDCs.

Doctors say that patients infected with measles virus can be cured, if provided timely treatment. The country aims to eliminate the disease by 2016.
