´Indians are also participating in the fair´

Neoteric CAN InfoTech, an IT trade fair, is kicking off in the eastern city of Biratnagar on Friday. Republica caught up with Santosh Dahal, president of Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Morang chapter to know about the highlights of the event. Excerpts:

How are the preparations going?

All the preparations for the IT fair, which is being held from Friday till Monday, have been completed. The event, where various IT products and services will be put on display in 90 stalls, will be visited by at least 50,000 people. The venue will also have lots of IT experts to guide those who do not have the knowledge of the subject. We believe we have put in all our efforts to make the event successful.

What are the highlights of the fair?

It´s the discounts. We believe bargain hunters will benefit the most as products and services available at the fair will be relatively cheaper than those available at stores in the market. Other highlights include seminar, product demonstration, gaming and free WiFi zones, and career guidance and job fair. Apart from that, we have also set up an IT museum where products ranging from 40-year-old 50-kg heavy computer to latest models of laptop will be showcased. The fair has so many attractions, no one will get bored.

Who are your target groups?

Since the fair is being held for the first time in the eastern region of the country, our primary focus is on the people of eastern Nepal. We are also expecting visitors from Indian states and cities like Bihar, Sikkim, Darjeeling and Silguri. But this does not mean the event is limited to this crowd. The fair is open to everyone -- from people who only know how to use cell phones to those who are IT-savvy and want to update themselves about latest IT products and services.

´Everyone must visit computer museum´

Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Morang chapter is organizing an IT trade fair called Neoteric CAN InfoTech 2011 in Biratnagar. Republica caught up with Nirmal Tamang, coordinator of CAN InfoTech organizing committee, to get an insight into the event. Excerpts:

What is the main reason behind organizing this event?

The fair is being organized to keep the people of eastern Nepal updated about the latest IT products and services. We believe the event will serve this purpose.

It is said the venue will also have a computer museum. Could you please elaborate?

We have set up a computer museum for the first time in Nepal. It will showcase IT products from computer that is 40 years old to latest models of laptops. The museum was established to give people a feeling on the evolution of the IT sector. I believe it will be a good platform for those who what to know about the latest and obsolete IT products. Everyone should visit this zone.

Have you received government support to organize the event?

We have received support from Morang District Development Committee and Biratnagar Sub-metropolitan City. The offices of these two entities are also eager on launching e-governance services. We believe the state should extend support for development of the IT sector. It is also the government´s responsibility to make IT services accessible to the people. In this context, the government should formulate necessary policies to promote the country´s IT sector.
