Bhutanese refugee from Nepal shot dead in US

ROCHESTER, July 23: Relatives and co-workers of a man fatally shot in Rochester last weekend say he was a refugee from Nepal and the father of seven children.




Family members say 38-year-old Jit Mongar arrived in the U.S. a few years ago and was working at an electronics recycling company in Brockport to support his family, which includes his wife and their seven children under 18.

Relatives say Mongar had stopped at a store on Lake Avenue late Sunday night when he was approached by a group and shot as he got into his car. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he died.



Police have released few details. Officials say no suspects are in custody as the investigation continues.



An estimated 2,300 refugees from Bhutan and Nepal have resettled in Rochester in recent years
