According to Army, the international standard court took about a month to construct. Army also handed over the court to Pokhara Tourism Council (PTC) on Saturday.
The beach volleyball is mostly played at the bank of ocean. "Though we don´t have ocean, we have utilized the bank of Lake Fewa which will provide some semblence of an ocean beach," Rana said adding, "We are optimistic that the court will prove to be a recreational spot for domestic and international tourist. It will also be helpful for promotion of beach volleyball in Nepal."
Earlier, Army had constructed its own beach court at its division premises. But the Barahaighat court will be open to public at anytime.
The court was constructed at a former football ground after filling about 3 ft ditch with sand. About 50 trucks of sand were used for the purpose. Though Army will look after the maintenance, PTC and toursim board will run the court. According to PTC President Tikaram Sapkota, they are also planning to build swimming pool and tennis court at the open land.
According to Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) Secretary Ramnath Bhandari the association will conduct a men´s national volleyball tournament in the Nepali month of Aswin.
The NVA had already initiated moves to construct a beach volleyball court at the Pokhara Stadium premises and spent Rs. 70,000. But the construction work was halted following lack of budget.
Earlier this year, a beach volleyball court was constructed at Kirtipur, Kathmandu by NVA.
