SIRAHA, March 25: Deforestation in the Chure region has escalated once again even as the government reportedly shelved its 'plan' to lift ban on extraction of Chure resources following widespread criticism.
LAHAN, March 18: Cadres of the disgruntled United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) have vandalized signboards of various newly created rural municipalities in Siraha district on Friday. They also padlocked various offices of rural municipalities in the district, expressing dissatisfaction over the restructuring of the local units under the new federal structure.

SAPTARI, March 7: It has been two days since Sabita Mehta of Maleth-2 got bed-ridden. Her relatives have been forcefully feeding her water. She is alive she but not fully conscious. Every time she wakes up she starts screaming: “Let me go, he (Sanjan Mehta) is calling me!” and later gets unconscious.

LAHAN, Feb 20: At a time when as all eyes are on Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to see if his government will announce the election date, the head of government on Sunday flew to Siraha to inaugurate a weeklong Shreemad Bhagwat Mahapuraan, a religious function. When the village was merged into Golbajar municipality a few months ago, the villagers were elated, hoping to receive more services to boost their businesses. However, unlike what they had thought, they are now faced with the serious problem of water shortage. Let alone water for irrigation, the locals do not have adequate water even for drinking. The water crisis has bothered everyone in Golbajar now, thanks to the fast drying water sources.

In the absence of the people’s representatives at the local bodies, local development has critically suffered across the country and Madhes is the hardest hit, say the stakeholders. Poor infrastructure development has made the matter even worse for the Madhes society, they lament.
SIRAHA, Feb 16: Aurahi village in Siraha district used to be known for its agricultural prosperity. That is now just a memory. The once arable lands have turned barren and the village resembles a desert location, with most of the farmland covered in sand.
LAHAN, Feb 9: National Reconstruction Authority’s (NRA) to lift ban on excavating construction materials in the Chure forest range to aid in the reconstruction of earthquake affected areas has alarmed conservationists and stakeholders. They have expressed concerns that the step would be exploited to further damage the already fragile Chure ecology.
LAHAN, Feb 3: Police have decided to take secessionist leader Chandra Kanta Raut also known as CK Raut, who was arrested yesterday, to the Siraha District Court to seek a remand. According to chief of the Area Police Office, Lahan, DSP Rajkumar KC, a case on organized crime against the state is already registered against Raut.
LAHAN, Jan 18: Police have beefed up security condition in Lahan after knowing that CK Raut, coordinator of Free Madhes Alliance, is arriving here to address a mass meeting on the occasion of 10th Anniversary of Madhes Movement in the district headquarters of Siraha on Wednesday.
LAHAN, Jan 18: On January 19, 2007, Ramesh Mahato became the first martyr of Madhes movement after he got killed in course of the movement. Madhes-centric political parties still recall the fateful day he died as they assemble every year at Sahid Ramesh Chowk to reflect on his important contributions to the movement.
