KATHMANDU, Oct 4: The Special Court has found Assistant Sub Inspector Dilip Karki guilty of embezzling Rs 675,000. A full bench of Justices Yamuna Bhattarai, Shaligram Koirala, Balabhadra Bastola found Karki guilty of embezzling funds of the petrol pump run by the Police Welfare Fund.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) registered a case at the Special Court on 15th August, 2021 alleging that funds of the petrol pumps operated by the police in Naxal had been embezzled.

The Commission had registered the case with the claim that Karki had embezzled the amount paid by other people to the customer's account at the petrol pump and embezzled the amount based on non-performing transactions.

The court found Karki guilty of corruption and ordered him to pay half of the amount claimed by the CIAA. The court also said that Karki’s jail sentence will be announced soon. In a criminal case, there is a provision to determine the sentence after a few days of the conviction.

According to the spokesperson for the Special Court, Dhan Bahadur Karki, the date for sentencing has been fixed on October 12. “It has been determined that the damage was Rs 675,000. Punishment will be determined later,” he said.

After investigating the complaint of misappropriation of funds, the CIAA registered a case against Karki for embezzling Rs 10.397 million without registering the actual amount of oil sold while he was working at the police petrol pump.

The CIAA demanded Karki be punished as per the provisions of Section 3 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059 and Clause (j) of Section 3 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059 as it was a criminal act as per Section 17 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059.  The CIAA had claimed Karki should be made to cough up Rs 10.4 million.
