More than nine cases recorded daily on average in the past six months 

KATHMANDU, Oct 22: Nepal has recorded as many as 1,673 cases of violence against women in the past six months.

More than 90 percent of such cases are committed by family members or close relatives of the victims, according to the latest data from the Women’s Rehabilitation Center, Nepal (WORAC).

In the past six months, 44 cases of gang rape, 825 cases of domestic violence, 160 case of social violence, seven cases of murder and 51 cases of attempt to rape were recorded. Similarly, 18 cases of human trafficking, 76 cases of sexual abuse, 61 cases of suicide and 31 other cases related to violence against women were recorded in the same period, according to WORAC, an NGO working in the field of women’s issues.

In Nepal, women and girls are mostly the victims of rape and sexual abuse. They are also subjected to a number of other cases of social and domestic violence.

According to the data from WORAC, a total of 283 rape victims are girls below 18 years of age including 39 from 2 to 10 and 244 from 11 to 18 years old. Similarly, as many as 161 rape-accused were found to be the victims’ neighbors, 53 family members, 23 love partners, four teachers, eight service providers and 25 strangers.  

Likewise, most rape victims are girls from 17 to 25 years of age. A total of 522 rape cases were recorded among this age group in the past six months in the country.

The data also shows that most of those accused of committing rape are youths from 26 to 35 years old. In the past six months, a total of 474 youths were accused of being involved in other cases of violence against women.
