KATHMANDU, April 12: Pramila Rijal of Armed Police Force (APF) won third gold medal winning the 200 meters women’s race at the Dasharath Stadium in the Fifth National Games on Sunday.[break]
She completed the distance in 25.93 seconds finishing ahead of policewomen Chandra Kala Thapa (26.85 secs) and Sabitri Nepali (26.97 secs). With the event, Pramila finished the event with three gold and three silver medals.
In men’s 200m, Gopal KC of Nepal Police won the gold completing the race in 22.65 seconds whereas Western Region’s Tilak Ram Mahato and Suman Bhattarai of APF took silver and bronze medals respectively.
Surya Maya Rai of APF also claimed her third gold winning women’s 800m race. The 5,000m and 1,500m champion needed 2 mins 20.50 seconds to complete the race. Chhaya Khatri of Nepal Police (2:23.50 mins) and Dil Maya Karki of Mid-West Region (2:26.30 mins) finished second and third respectively.
APF’s domination in athletics continued with Lok Bahadur Rokaya winning the 800m men’s race with the timing of 1 mins 58.20 seconds. He was followed by policemen Siddanta Adhikari and Radheshyam Kawa.
APF won two more golds on the final day. Asha Narayan Chaudhary won 3,000m steeple chase completing the race in 9 minutes 54.56 seconds. His teammate Gagan Singh Budayar and Ram Prasad Chaudhary of Nepal Police were placed second and third respectively.
In men’s javelin throw, Nepal Police’s Narendra Jung Shah covered a distance of 62.53 meters to claim the gold ahead of veteran Khursed Ahmed Khan who managed to throw 55.80 meters. Bal Krishna Chaudhary of APF took the bronze.
Football
Eastern Region stunned Armed Police Force (APF) in men’s football final as it recorded a 1-0 win on Sunday under the Fifth National Games that concluded here at Dasharath Stadium.
Buddha Chemjong scored the decider in the first minute of the highly competitive match. Both the teams made several good moves in the match but failed to score any other goal.
In women’s football, APF thrashed Eastern Region 4-0. Anu Gurung scored a brace for the winner. Likewise, Jamuna Gurung added another. APF were awarded with a suicide goal from Pramila Gurung of Eastern Region for the fourth.
New national high jump record
Bal Krishna Chaudhary set a new national record by jumping 1.96 meters in the men’s high jump. He bettered his own record of 1.90 meters set in 10th South Asian Games in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Dhirednra Chaudhary of Nepal Police took the silver clearing 1.80m while Basant Chaudhary of Mid-West Region claimed the bronze.
APF topped the athletics events claiming 19 golds out of 35.
Chess: Central Region makes clean sweep
Central Region clean swept medals in chess under the Fifth National Games that concluded here at the Staff College , Jawalakhel on Sunday.
Badrilal Nepali, William Lal Shrestha and Prachanda Man Malakar of the Central Region won the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Badrilal Nepali won the gold with 8.5 points to defeat Sujendra Parasad Shrestha in the last round. Likewise, William Lal Shrestha secured the second position with 7.5 points. Shrestha shared the point with Madan Krishna Kayastha in the 10th round.
Prachanda Man Malakar, who had equal point with William, stood third on the basis of progressive points. Prachanda beat Purendra Bikram Lakhe in the last round.
Lawn Tennis: Priti and Ramesh wins mixed double
The pair of Ramesh Karki and Priti Rijal, on Sunday, won the mixed-doubles tennis gold at the ongoing Fifth National Games.
In the finals, held at the sports complex in Satdobato, Karki and Rijal defeated Shandra Shahi and Renu Bajracharya, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1.
The pairs of Aatma Ram Karki and Aslesa Lisahovich, and Manoj Shah and Pavitra Gurung took the bronze.
In the women’s doubles, Malika Rana and Kaplana Thapa registered an easy straight-set victory over Ritu Gurung and Bimala Basyal, 6-3 and 6-3, for the gold.
The pairs of Likki Chhetry and Kanchan Thapa Magar, and Ritu Gurung and Bimala Basyal won the bronze.
Basketball: Central Region wins title
The Central Region bagged the basketball gold on Sunday by defeating the Armed Police Force (APF) in the finals, held at the covered hall of the National Sports Council.
Riding on the 35 points scored by Rabindra Maharjan, the Central Region beat the APF 83-67. The Central Region, who trailed the APF during the first quarter, 18-19, led through all the remaining quarters, 19-16, 23-21 and 23-11, to win the match. Robin Khatri contributed the most points, 14, for the APF.
In the third-place match, the Nepal Army beat the Western Region 72-71. The Nepal Army’s Dilliram Pudasaini scored 31 points, while Sushil Gurung scored 26 points for the Western Region.
