Born in Dingla of Bhojpur district in 1917 BS, she is well known as a rebellious woman in Nepali society.[break]
Yogmaya, a symbol of revolutionary women in Nepali literature was also an Ashu Kabi or poet who could write poetry instantaneously.
Yogmaya was established as one who attained the divine powers by meditating in a cave for years. She had defeated palace scholars of Rana Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher in scholarly discourse.
In a grand Yagya organized in 1997 BS in Dingla, she told her followers, "it is not an age for the true devotees", and her hands and feet were tied, when this reached the Rana palace.
At the end of the Yagya, she had decided to jump into the Yagyakunda, or the fire made for the Yagya, along with 240 followers with the call for immolation.
But she jumped into the Arun river, along with her 68 followers on Saturday, Asar 22 of the year 1998 BS, it is stated in a press communique issued by the Nai Prakashan.
In the communique signed by Nai Publication Member Secretary Narendraraj Prasain and Executive Producer of the Surya Chandra Production, Chandramala Sharma on Friday, it is stated that the film will be made in both Nepali and English and actress Suryamala Khanal will play the lead role of Yogmaya.
The film will be an art film rather than commercial, said Prasain. The film will be directed by renowned actor Saroj Khanal.
