ASI fined for thrashing motorcyclist

MAHENDRANAGAR, Sept 21: An assistant sub inspector (ASI) in Kanchanpur district has been fined Rs 15,000 for brutally thrashing a motorcyclist for not wearing helmet.



The deputy in-charge at the Area Police Office, Dodhara, Madan Raj Upadhyaya, had severely beaten up Deepak Bam of Dodhara-6 Saturday for not wearing helmet. The motorcyclist, who was going to his friend´s house for the night, claimed that constable Surendra Okheda also joined in the thrashing.



The victim has injuries on his arm, elbow and hip and is being treated at the Mahakali Zonal Hospital. He also has wounds in his left shoulder owing to Okheda´s bites.



The irate locals surrounded the police station Saturday evening following which Bam was handed over to his family by the police.



ASI Upadhyaya, during a meeting with the members of public on Sunday morning admitted he was under the influence of alcohol and had beaten up Bam. Upadhyaya paid Bam Rs 15,000 for his treatment. He has also agreed to repair Bam´s motorcycle but the locals are still seeking his transfer.



Chief of the Dodhara Police Office Mahendra Kalauni has said he will recommend departmental action against the guilty duo.
