Although the district has not been directly affected by the recent earthquakes, the DAO has received over 5,000 applications. Officials at the DAO said many applicants are reporting fake damages eyeing the compensation promised by the government for the quake victims.
According to the DAO, it has received 563 applications from 34 VDCs, 363 from Nepalgunj sub-metropolitan area, and 98 from Kohalpur municipality.Request for compensation is being sought even for houses that have developed minor cracks and are not risky at all to live in, according to the DAO.
Soon after the government announced compensation for damaged houses and buildings, the DAO has been swamped with a large number of applications.
"We are still receiving applications reporting damages and seeking compensation," said Assistant Chief District Officer (CDO), Gunj Bahadur M. C.
Meanwhile, a meeting of district disaster relief committee (DDRC) presided over by CDO Bed Prakash Lekhak has recently decided not to provide compensation to homes with minor damages.
"The committee will compensate the quake-hit applicants with real damages to their houses," CDO Lekhak said.
