Women empowerment is too much discussed issue today. After the first international women conference the issue of women empowerment takes momentum. Women’s empowerment refers to the process in which women reflect upon their reality and question the reasons for their situation in society. It further includes developing alternative options and taking opportunities to address existing inequalities. It enables them to live their lives in the fullness of their capabilities and their own choices in respect of their rights as human beings. For empowering women in the coming days we need to analyze the current situation of women in world. Several researches have been conducted for exploring the current status of women in the world. Approximately 70% of those who live on less than a dollar each day are women. This figure indicates the positive relationship between women and poverty. Likewise women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours yet receive only 10% of the world’s income and own only 1% of the world’s property. Disparity remains in the fair distribution in the wages between women and men as this figure indicates. Women lacks access in the decision making process as women members of parliament globally average only 17% of all seats and only 8% of the world’s cabinet ministers are women. Seventy-five percent of the world’s 876 million illiterate adults are women. Of the 550 million low-paid workers in the world, 330 million or 60% are women.
From these figures we can assume that how harsh is the condition of women in the world. We need to consider these facts while designing and implementing the programs about the women empowerment. Women targeted income generating programs could be the effective way for uplifting the women from the poverty level. We need to reduce the percentage of poor that are women if we really wants the world with empowered women. Legal provisions should be made for the fair distribution of wage between men and women. Access to decision making is the key to the women empowerment. Quota system should be employed for securing at least 33% women representation in the parliament globally. Empower women without raising the education level of them is not possible. So we must think about raising the literacy level of the women for women empowerment.
