Confucius Institute in Nepal was first established at Kathmandu University with an agreement between the university authority and the Office of Chinese Language Council International in February 2007. The institute subsequently opened branches in other parts of the country including in Lalitpur, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini. It has imparted knowledge about Chinese language and cultures to over 4,000 Nepali students so far.[break]
Ministers, diplomats, senior government officials and students learning Chinese language, among others, participated in the event that was marked with Chinese cultural performances by Nepali students of various Confucius Institutes.
Addressing the function, Minister for Education Dinanath Sharma stressed on strengthening relations between Nepal and China not only at the state level, but also at institutional and people to people levels. “Confucius Institutes have not only been helping Nepalis learn Chinese language and culture, but also passing Nepalese culture and language to China,” he said.
Minister Sharma also said that there is a need to explore the possibilities of providing Chinese students with the opportunity to learn Nepalese culture and language. He said there is a great scope for people who know Chinese language in various fields including in tourism, hotel management and mountaineering in Nepal.
Chinese envoy to Nepal Yang Houlan said Confucius Institutes in Nepal have made contributed to promote mutual cooperation and friendship between Nepal and China. Adding that the Institutes have become a means to establish cross-cultural relations between the two friendly countries, the envoy said that the institutes would be able to achieve greater success in the days ahead.
