After his escape, Miya crossed into India’s Himachal Pradesh, where he was reportedly working for a water treatment company. According to Jhapa District Police Office Spokesperson Khagendra Bahadur Khadka, Miya suddenly lost consciousness on December 25 and collapsed. He died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in India.
His body was brought back to Nepal on Saturday through the Galgalia border point.
Miya had been serving a prison sentence for rape under a court verdict and had spent about four years in custody before escaping from the Central Jail. Police said necessary legal and administrative procedures are being completed following the repatriation of the body.
