KATHMANDU, Jan 5: In an attempt to improve health status of the people, the government has decided upgrade 20 select villages into model health villages. These villages will meet all international health indicators.

The Primary Health Revitalization Division (PHRD) under the Department of Health Services (DHS) said in the model health villages no children will be out of immunization, vitamin A and supplementation programs. Management of acute malnutrition, emergency obstetric care and skilled service provider will provide delivery services to pregnant women in these villages.

Likewise, counseling services of antenatal and postnatal care, breast feeding, family planning, hygiene practice, skilled management of diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition cases will be provided in these villages. Similarly, these villages will be also open-defecation free.

"We have asked all District Health Offices to send the names of the villages which can be selected for this program," an officer at PRD Madan Bahadur Shrestha said. He said that the PHRD would select only 20 villages among the proposed ones.

"We want to make all villages as model villages from the health perspective but due to the limited budget only 20 villages will be nominated for the program," he added. PHRDs said VDCs should show resources and potential to receive the financial aid to be model health villages.

"Only such villages, which have the potential to be model health villages, will get the assistance," he said.

The Child Health Division (CHD) under DHS said the health programs will deliver through existing health system.

"The government has envisaged model health villages where people will get all basic health facilities, which the constitution has ensured," Director of CHD Dr Shyamraj Upreti said.

He said that health centers of such villages will be well better equipped and health workers as well as Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) will be mobilized to achieve the targeted result. To promote other villages to be model health villages, the ministry has decided to launch an awareness program.

The ministry also said it is consulting the Ministry of Local Development for necessary support for the program.
