KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Balen Shah, who resigned as mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City on Sunday, has officially become a senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).
On Sunday, Shah arrived at the party’s central office in Baneshwor, taking charge from his designated office as a senior party leader, formally entering the mainstream of the party’s politics.

RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane welcomed Shah at the main entrance and together they rang the “Ghantighar” bell in a symbolic ceremony.
Inside the office, a separate chamber had been prepared for Shah as a senior leader, where he formally assumed his responsibilities. Thousands of supporters and well-wishers gathered around the Baneshwori area following the news of his arrival.
Shah will contest the upcoming House of Representatives election on March 5 from Jhapa–5. For this purpose, he resigned as mayor earlier today.
After formally joining the party, Shah, along with the RSP team, is scheduled to depart for a visit to Madhesh Province. According to party spokesperson Manish Jha, both party chief Lamichhane and senior leader Shah will leave for Janakpur later today.
