Gharti wins wheelchair race

KATHMANDU, July 11: Tej Bahadur Gharti of Khagendra Nawajeevan School and Sarita Rani Chaudhary from Kailali won gold medals in men´s and women´s 100 meter wheelchair race respectively on the opening day of the 16th School Level National Special Games at the Dasharath Stadium on Monday.



Birendra Bahadur Oli from Dang and Tikaram Gyawali of Shanti Sewa, Gaushala finished second and third respectively in the men´s category, while Shova Kumari Kamat and Geeta Bhusal of Khagendra Higher Secondary School claimed silver and bronze medals in the women´s section.[break]



Sarita Chaudhary won the women´s 50 meter track event in blind section in the Special Games organized by National Sports Council with support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Sanju Rana of Amar Singh Higher Secondary School, Pokhara and Sanita Bhattarai of Laboratory School finished second and third in the event. In the men´s event, Manoj Gautam of Laboratory, Bharat Chaulagain of Mangal Prasad School, Banke and Umesh Rai of Gyanchakshu School secured the top three positions respectively.



Rai, however, won the gold medal in men´s soft ball throw in blind section, while Anil Chaudhary of Nepal Rastriya Higher Secondary School and Yuvaraj Lama of Laboratory finished second and third respectively. In the women´s event, Chandra Karki, Lok Maya Rana and Sarita Aryal claimed the top three positions respectively.



Apsara Kafle of Sanjivani Higher Secondary School won the 100 meter race of visually impaired women. Sarita Lamichhane of Amar Singh and Durga Kumal of Mangal Prasad finished second and third respectively.



Sharada Thapa, Sujan Limbu and Barsha Gurung from Kendriya Bahira Higher Secondary School claimed gold, silver and bronze medals respectively in the shot put event of hearing impaired women. In the same event of men´s section, Jaya Prakash Chaudhary of Birat Bahira Secondary School, Dinesh Shrestha of Srijana Bahira Higher Secondary and Santosh Ghimire of Kendriya Bahira Higher Secondary School finished in the top three positions respectively.



Sushila Chaudhary from Kailali won the 100 meter race with a single crutch in the above 12 years age group of physically challenged girls. Sarita Nepali from Dang and Tulasi Nepali from Kailali finished second and third respectively.



In the boys´ event of the same age group, Parshuram Tharu, Ram Prasad Chaudhary and Ram Shankar Yadav from Banke claimed the top three spots respectively with two crutches.



Altogether 389 differently abled athletes are participating in the games.
