SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepal beats Indian team

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Nepal´s national cricket team registered three wickets victory over ELF Dilip Venserkar Academy in a friendly T20 match on Friday. The Nepali team is in Mumbai tour in order to practice for the upcoming ICC World T20 World Cup qualifiers to be held in the UAE in March.



Winning the toss, ELF Dilip Venserkar Academy elected to bat first and scored 154 runs for the loss of six wickets. [break]



Amrit Bhattarai and Basanta Regmi grabbed two wickets each while Krishna Karki and Mhboob Alam shared a wicket each. Nikhil Khare scored 43 runs while Sarfaraz Khan scored 40 runs.



Nepali team successfully met the target in 20 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Mehboob Alam was not out on 58 runs off 27 balls with five sixes and three boundaries. Gyanendra Malla scored 21 runs off 23 balls.



Wilson Hoops begins Saturday



KATHMANDU
: Wilson Academy announced Thursday that it will organize 12th Wilson Hoops from Saturday at its home court in Sitapaila. The basketball tournament will be held in senior and junior boys´ and senior girls´ categories.



Altogether 36 teams will participate in the tournament. Ullens is the defending champion in the senior boys´ category while the host Wilson lifted the junior boys´ title last year. Teresa Academy had won the senior girls´ trophy.[break]


Basnet, Raj in final


KATHMANDU: Ram Hari Basnet from Nepal and Megh Raj from India advanced into the final of 56-60 kg event on Friday during the First International Junior and Senior Kung-Fu Tournament being held at the Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu. Basnet defeated Jahangir from India while Megh Raj overcame Kiran Thapa from Nepal. In the men´s 52-56 kg Raj Kumar Lama and Hikmat Gurung also advanced into the final of the two-day event.



Daffodil sets up title clash with NIMS


KATHMANDU: Host Daffodil B and NIMS will lock horns for the title of the Fifth Daffodil Championship Inter School Senior Basketball Tournament on Saturday. In the semifinal played on Friday, host Daffodil defeated Golden Peak 54-48. In another semifinal, NIMS beat The Excelsior 53-23 with 22 points from Sandesh Tamang. Similarly, in the Sixth Daffodil Cup Inter School Junior Football Tournament, Brihaspati Vidhya Sadan and Deep Jyoti will face each other in the title clash. Brihaspati beat Tri Jyoti 1-0 while Deep Jyoti overcame Reed Model 2-1.



Opal, Gyanodaya in quarters


KATHMANDU: Opal International School and Gyanodaya on Friday advanced into the quarterfinals of the Second Innovative Inter School Basketball Tournament in senior boys´ category. Opal thumped VS Niketan 45-34 as Tshring Sherpa scored 21 points. Pujan Sherchan´s 22 points guided Gyanodaya for a 38-16 win over Nepal Central High School. In another match, Neric routed Chadani 44-20. In the junior boys´ category, Innovative and Greenland registered wins. Innovative overcame Deneb 29-14 while Greenland beat Rose Bud 21-13. In the senior girls´ section, Gyanodaya thrashed New Summit 41-12.



KES beats New Shrine


KATHMANDU: Kathmandu English School (KES) defeated New Shrine 18-12 in the First NOBS Inter School Basketball Tournament in junior boys´ category. Meanwhile, Wilson Academy and NIMS won their respective matches in 3X3 senior boys´ basketball. Wilson edged past the host NOBS ´B´ 19-18 while NIMS beat NOBS ´A´ 21-14.



Kathmandu Valley, Amar in final


KATHMANDU: Five goals from Raju Dangol helped Amar English School secure a comprehensive 6-2 win over RIBS the semifinal of the Fourth Valleywide Inter School Junior Boys´ Knockout Football Tournament on Friday. Shan Dangol added one more for the winning side. Ankit Panta and Anish Maharjan scored a goal each for RIBS. With the win, Amar School set up a final clash with Kathmandu Valley, which beat the host Loyalty School 2-0. Lakpa Tenzing Sherpa and man-of-the-match Arik Bista scored a goal each. The final will be played on Sunday.



Solu, Shankar Dev in QF


KATHMANDU: Solu Multiple Campus, host Shankar Dev (Blue), Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) and Public Youth Campus advanced into the quarterfinals of the GP Koirala Memorial Cup Nationwide Inter Campus Boys´ Volleyball Tournament on Friday. Solu beat Trichandra 25-10, 25-10 in its first match and then defeated Tribhuwan Multiple Campus Palpa 18-25, 25-10, 25-23. Shankar Dev (Blue) thrashed Rapti Multiple Campus 25-17, 25-16 while NCC also thumped Rapti 25-16, 25-15. Likewise, Public Youth beat Shankar Dev (Red) 25-14, 25-20 in its first match and thrashed Koteshwar 25-23, 25-13 in the second match. Mahendra Ratna Campus also edged past Koteshwar 25-9, 25-20 in the last match of the day.
