Peaceful: NHRC
The National Human Rights Commission said the first day of the Maoist-called general strike remained peaceful in the Katmandu valley though violece was reported in some places outside the capital.
In a statement issued on its monitoring of the general strike across the country, the constitutional rights body said its 13 monitoring teams reported clashes in Birauta of Pokhara and Jharpatan, Rani of Biratnagar, Birgunj, Chitwan, Butwal, Dang and Dailekh.
Only a few untoward incidents: Home Ministry
Meanwhile, Home Ministry has said the first day of the Maoist’s general strike had been largely peaceful with only a few untoward incidents.
In a statement, the ministry said that police charged lathis and fired on air in Chitwan to ensure smooth running of the examinations while 14 were injured in a clash between Maoists and locals at Rani, Biratnagar.
The ministry added that the Maoists vandalized four government offices – two each in Biratnagar and Butwal. “There were minor damage to a car and a tourist bus in Kathmandu,” it added.
The ministry has thanked all people helping in security throughout the nation while requesting the Maoists not to allow their cadres to become aggressive.
