10th South Asia Economic Summit kicks off

KATHMANDU Nov 14: The 10th South Asia Economic Summit began here today with the objective of holding extensive deliberations on the problems facing the development of South Asia. 


More than 200 delegates from the South Asian countries are taking part in the conference to be hosted jointly by the Ministry of Commerce, National Planning Commission and South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE).

Inaugurating the summit, Finance Minister Gyanendra Bahadur Karki expressed the confidence that the summit would be fruitful in promoting the overall development of the South Asia region. 


Commerce Minister Min Bahadur Biswakarma called for collective efforts to put an end to poverty in South Asia, that still continues in the 21st century. 



The Commerce Minister of Bhutan, the Minister of State for Economic Development of Maldives, Vice-chairman of National Planning Commission Dr Swarnim Wagley and SAWTEE Chair Dr Poshraj Pandey said that the summit would be significant in promoting the development of infrastructure, transport and other sectors in the region. 



Commerce Ministers, planning experts and economists from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) member countries and experts from SAARC observer countries are taking part in the summit that will end on Thursday. 



Extensive deliberations are being held on 18 themes including inter-regional trade, sustainable development goals, inclusive development, climate change, inter-regional investment, disaster risk mitigation, among others in the three-day summit. RSS
