KATHMANDU, March 2: The Women's Rehabilitation Center (WOREC) has condemned the recent incident involving the assault and injury of street vendors in Sundhara by the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police. 

The WOREC in a statement drew attention to the incident saying, "The series of violent incidents against the self-employed laborers and street traders clearly reflects the oppressive attitude of the metropolis towards the working class".

Citing Article 33 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal 2015, which mentions that every citizen has the right to employment, the terms and conditions of employment and unemployment assistance shall be in accordance with federal laws, WOREC stressed on the constitutional framework supporting rights of workers.

Similarly, Article 34 (2) of the Constitution provides for the right to labor.  It mentions that every citizen has the right to choose employment. WOREC argues that this abuse against the workers against the constitutional system and purpose is a direct violation of the constitution.

WOREC has insisted that it is the responsibility of the state to create dignified and secure employment for its citizens. The WOREC in the statement further states that the fact that the state has become indifferent to working class people has made a mockery of the constitution and the law.

Human Rights and Social Justice Program Coordinator Sulochana Khanal at WOREC said, "Condemning this kind of repression, we draw the attention of the relevant agencies for ensuring the rights of all workers and guaranteeing human rights."
