Women squad leaves for Kala Patthar to observe March 8

KATHMANDU, Feb 29: A team of Nepali women left for Kala Patthar to observe the International Women's Day aiming to draw global attention to snow melting caused by climate change and its consequences for the local communities.

The trip is arranged by Sath Sathai, an organization pitching for the agenda of climate change and women empowerment.

UN Women Nepal's representative Patricia Fernandez-Pacheco bid farewell to the team comprising 25 women from diverse sectors at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

According to the organization, the ‘special’ gathering at Kala Patthar on the occasion of the March 8 Day, aims to draw attention of national and international communities to the dire consequences of climate change in the Sagarmatha region and the challenges being faced by the mountain population.

Earlier, the organization decided to observe this year’s International Women’s Day in Kala Patthar of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) region in Solukhumbu district.

Women from different walks of life are scheduled to march up to the region.

An interaction will be held with the people’s representatives and the community on the impact of climate change during the march, organization president Prajeeta Karki said.

The team will engage in an interaction with the local people’s representatives and communities on ‘women empowerment for connecting government and the community for climate change’ on March 2 at Syangboche.

They will reach Kala Patthar on March 8. The gathering will draw the attention of the national and international communities to the negative impacts of climate change on community, agriculture and tourism.

This year’s International Women’s Day is being observed with the theme of ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’.
