Know MoreKATHMANDU, July 1: The University Grants Commission (UGC) of India published a list of fake universities on Wednesday, reported Times of India (ToI) newspaper. The apex body for higher education made the list available to ensure that the students wouldn’t be hoodwinked.
The UGC’s list comprised a total of 21 universities. “Uttar Pradesh tops the list as eight fake universities have been found there, and six are in Delhi as it takes the second spot. Meanwhile, West Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu share the same spot as they have one fake university each,” stated the newspaper.
The UGC clarified that an institution can be deemed as a university if it is established by the central, state and provincial act or if the institution falls under the Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. The commission further stated that such institutions were barred from representing themselves as a university according to the Section 23 of the Act.
