Thame Khola flash flood confirmed as a result of glacial lake burst

Thame Khola flash flood confirmed as a result of glacial lake burst

KATHMANDU, Aug 17: It has been confirmed that the flood with debris that occurred in Thame, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5, on Friday afternoon, was caused by a glacial lake burst.

The rural municipality has shared a video of the inspection by helicopter on social media. After the inspection, it was confirmed that a lake near Tasilapcha Base Camp had burst and caused the flooding.

The municipality stated that there is no further risk of flooding. A similar glacial lake burst occurred 40 years ago, causing a flood at that time.

The rare flood has destroyed 20 houses, a school, and a clinic in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-5 in Solukhumbu District. The Nepali Army and police have rescued 93 people from Thame and relocated them to a house behind the army camp, while 42 people have been housed in a local community building, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dwarika Prasad Ghimire said.

The flash flood has also disrupted traffic above Namche, as it washed away the trekking trail from Fakding in Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality-3 to Namche, disrupting movement between the lower region and the Everest area.
