Taste of tradition at Matka Café

Taste of tradition at Matka Café

The recently launched Matka Café at Naya Baneshwor, Thapagaun has become one of the hangout hotspots among the youngsters for its warm ambience and special tea.

The café serves different flavors of tea in traditional clay pots. This place also offers coffee along with other bakery items and popcorn, among other food items. One of the co-owners of the café, Prakash Pyakurel said, “As I was planning to start a business, I thought opening a café would be the perfect investment as Kathmandu is filled with youths. A café is a perfect place to attract young population if the concept is unique and relatable.”

He added, “I was raised in Jeetpur, Bara, and there I used to people drinking tea in traditional clay pots. Hence, I decided to implement the very concept in my new business.”

Pots used in this café are brought from Bhaktpur. “As people traditionally consider used pots as impure, we dispose the pots after one use. People usually ask if we also serve coffee and other cold drinks in clay pots, but we don’t.”
