Know MoreKATHMANDU, Aug 12: Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the Legislature-Parliament, Janardan Sharma, who is considered as a front-runner to become a minister in the new government, resigned from his post on Friday. He announced his resignation during a meeting of the committee held at Singha Durbar.
Sharma told the meeting that he took the decision to resign as per the parliamentary tradition of leaving the PAC leadership to opposition parties. "It is a parliamentary tradition to leave the leadership of the watchdog like PAC to opposition. I had decided to quit the chairmanship when my party CPN (Maoist Center) joined the previous government but the then main opposition itself urged me to continue," said Sharma.
"This time I resigned from the position as my party CPN (Maoist Center) is leading the government," he added.
However, sources at the Maoist Center said that Sharma decided to resign only after party Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal assured him of appointing him as Minister for Energy.
“I will accept if the party assigns me a new responsibility. Otherwise, I will work as a member of the PAC,” he told the meeting, adding, “I relinquished the post as it is for the opposition parties."
Sharma submitted his resignation to Speaker Onsari Gharti.
