SC issues interim order to halt retirement of police officers on ground of 30-year service limit

KATHMANDU, Aug 22: The Supreme Court has issued an interim order preventing the retirement of police officers due to the 30-year service limit.

A single bench of SC Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal issued the interim order preventing the retirement of 21 police officers who were scheduled to retire on September 1. The court also issued an order preventing any changes to their responsibilities. A full bench of SC is scheduled to hear the petition filed by senior police officials on September 26.

The Supreme Court has requested a written response from the defendants involved in the dispute and has scheduled a full hearing for September 26.

The interim order comes in response to a writ petition filed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jeevan Kumar Shrestha and 21 other officers of the Nepal Police. The petition was lodged against the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Nepal Police Headquarters, and the Police Record Management Department, contesting their scheduled retirement on September 1 due to the 30-year service rule.
