Rhino calf succumbs to tiger attack injuries

RATNAGAR (Chitwan), Oct 16: A rhino calf rescued more than a month ago from Meghauli – located at the western part of Chitwan – has died.

The male rhino calf which was undergoing treatment in Sauraha has died, Chitwan National Park (CNP) Information Official, Nurendra Aryal said.

The five-month-old calf with multiple cuts, fractures and bruises from tiger attack was rescued from western Meghauli area on September 8. It succumbed to a deep wound in its right thigh.

The CNP believes the calf is a baby of a rhino which was recently killed in electric shock due to recklessness on part of Hotel Meghauli Serai. Another orphaned calf which was rescued along with this one is now in healthy condition, CNP Eastern Sector Chief, Abhinaya Pathak shared.

The calf was rescued from the banks of a local river at Mayure community at Amaltari of Nawalparasi on September 5. The rhino calf has been named 'Mayure' as it was found in that area.

Many orphaned calves have repeatedly fallen under tiger attacks or rescued from conditions prone to attacks in CNP, but without a reliable wildlife hospital and rescue centre the risk continues unabated.

A few months ago, a rhino with fatal bullet injuries from poachers' attack had died undergoing treatment in Chitwan. RSS
