‘Red alert’ lifted as weather improves

‘Red alert’ lifted as weather improves

KATHMANDU, Aug 9: Meteorologists have reported some improvement in the weather conditions, making it similar to what it was two days ago. However, there remains a probability of heavy rains in some areas, which may still cause damage.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had issued a red alert on August 6 and 7, indicating a high risk in 34 districts. It has been reported that the situation has since improved.

In a special bulletin issued on August 5, the department had warned that 34 districts were at high risk and 36 districts were at moderate risk from August 6 to 7. The government had instructed against operating night buses in high-risk districts.

At that time, the low-pressure line of the monsoon had shifted towards Nepal. When this low-pressure line of the monsoon moves northwards from its average position, it is over Nepal's sky, resulting in increased rainfall. Currently, the low-pressure line of the monsoon has shifted southwards from its average position over Nepal. Therefore, meteorologists said that the risk is not as extreme as it was in previous days.

For the next three days, the water levels in the Koshi, Narayani, Karnali, Mahakali, and their tributaries, as well as the Kankai, Kamala, Bagmati, East Rapti, West Rapti, and Babai rivers, are expected to remain below the alert level, according to the Flood Forecasting Division.

The Kathmandu Valley is currently experiencing alternating sunny and cloudy weather. It will generally remain cloudy across the country, with a possibility of rain in some areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, and at a few places in Madhesh Province. This situation is expected to continue for the next three to four days.

Sindhupalchok experienced heavy rain on Wednesday night.
