LALITPUR, June 14: The Rato Machindranath chariot procession, honoring the god of rain and good harvest, will commence on August 1. Currently, the chariot of Rato Machindranath is stationed in the local area of Thati Tole in Lalitpur.

Shahu Shakya, the priest of Machindranath, explained that the chariot started its journey from Pulchowk and has been kept in Thati Tole after passing through various places in Lalitpur such as Gabahal, Mangal Bazar, Sundhara, and Lagankhel.

According to Shahu, while last year's procession concluded in 35 days, this year's procession will span three months according to the calendar. He stated, "After pulling the chariot from Thatitole to Jawalakhel Chowk on August 1, the 'Bhoto Jatra' exhibition will take place on August 4. If Machindranath takes two days to reach Jawalakhel, then the 'Bhoto Jatra' display will be on August 5."

The Rato Machindranath chariot procession, an annual tradition in Lalitpur, is renowned as the oldest and longest procession in the Kathmandu Valley. The journey of Rato Machindranath typically begins on Baisakh Shukla Pratipada.

Narayan Byanjahn, one of the organizers of the Rato Machindranath chariot procession, mentioned that repairs were conducted during this year's procession upon encountering issues to ensure its smooth operation. He stated, "We have already completed the repairs of the chariot this year. It will remain stationed at Thalitole until August 1 while devotees are currently engaged in worshiping Rato Machindranath."

This year, Nim Raj Shakya has taken on the role of 'Khalpaneju' while Sampurna Shakya has assumed the role of 'Jalpaneju'. The priests are performing worship rituals for the auspicious journey of Rato Machhindranath chariot, which has halted at Thati Tole for an auspicious time. Nepal Police have been deployed to ensure the security of the chariot.
