NTA seeks clarification from internet service providers for allowing the operation of TikTok

NTA seeks clarification from internet service providers for allowing the operation of TikTok

KATHMANDU, Feb 24: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has sought explanation from some internet service providers (ISPs) after it was revealed that they allowed the operation of TikTok, a social media platform which has been banned by the government.

The government has banned the popular networking site arguing that its contents have disturbed social harmony.

The NTA has also warned of strict action against such service providers under the Telecommunications Act, 1997, for violating the directive issued to implement the government's decision.

Earlier, the NTA had sent a letter to all internet service providers and mobile service providers, instructing them to ban TikTok as per the government's decision. However, TikTok is still accessible through some internet service provider companies.

The NTA has also appealed to all people to report any internet service providers allowing the operation of TikTok at recontent@nta.gov.np. When providing information, one must specify the internet service provider company responsible.

Earlier, TikTok sent a letter with commitments to work with government agencies to regulate its contents, but the government has not made any decision regarding allowing its operation in Nepal.
